Public Health initiates in Ojós the first pilot treatment against the black fly in the Region (11/06/2017)

The Environmental Health Service, which reports to the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions of the Ministry of Health, collaborates with the City Council of Ojós in the first treatment against blackflies in the Region, where this insect has been massively located.

The counseling technicians have also encouraged the advice of a world expert in this type of procedure, the German doctor Heiko Kotter, who has moved to the locality to ensure the proper development of these works.

The City Council of Ojós has decided to put a stop to this annoying insect by seeking the support of the Ministry of Health, which has done a study of larval density in the river and has identified the species, with the help of the Center for Biomedical Research of La Rioja .

The approach of this problem will be solved by biolarvicides experienced in other areas of Spain and Europe, where the effectiveness of this product to combat fly and mosquito larvae reaches between 95 and 100 per cent.

In the case of Ojós, this week the waters of the river Segura have been treated as they pass through this locality to eliminate insects.

The pilot test on Wednesday was a success, with a hundred percent mortality of larvae in several kilometers of river, without being affected the rest of fauna.

The black fly has proliferated for a few years in municipalities near the Segura River, causing discomfort for farmers and neighbors, as some species of this insect sting people and flutter in a group around the face.

The black fly measures about six millimeters.

It appears between May and October, although in the Region it can remain more months.

Its greatest activity is recorded at dusk and at dawn.

Although the species that has settled in the area prefers to feed on animals, their insistence on fluttering over the face and get into the ears, mouth and nose makes it very annoying to perform outdoor activities.
