Experts and researchers from Spain, Morocco and Tunisia discussed in Ojós on the expulsion of the Moors (01/12/2014)

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Universities and the City of Ojós part in the second edition of the international conference 'Descendants of Andalusian Moors in the Western Mediterranean', to be held from 23 to 26 April in the town, and in which experts and researchers from Spanish, Moroccan and Tunisian universities will discuss the expulsion of the Moors.

The Minister of Education, Culture and Universities, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, attended today the presentation of the congress, which were also the mayor of eyes, Pablo Melgarejo, general director of Mediterranean House, Almudena Muñoz, and the Research and Policy Cultural Oxox, Buenaventura Buendía. During his speech, the Minister noted the close relationship of the Moors with the Region of Murcia, and indicated that "the Ricote Valley, where they remained until 1614, was one of the last refuges of the Moors in Spain, while the Cartagena became the port through which they left most of the descendants of converts Muslims were expelled from Spain ".

This conference, Pedro Antonio Sánchez added, "will help us better understand our history and our heritage and ultimately, our culture, one of our greatest assets and motor development, growth and employment".

The conference, organized by the City of eyes, the Foundation Hispano-Moroccan Al-Idrisi and Oxox Cultural Association, aims to shed light on issues that are still controversial, as the fate of the expelled and those who managed to evade deportation, itineraries, shapes and locations of their settlements in the new host countries or the identity continuity of their descendants in both shores of the Mediterranean.

The conference, first published last April in Tetouan, is divided into three thematic areas in which will be analyzed through lectures and roundtables, the phenomenon of resistance, exceptions and concealment;

itineraries, destinations and settlements expelled in the Maghreb and southern European countries and, finally, assimilation and identity Moorish before and after the expulsion.

In addition, the program includes a tour of the medieval heritage of Murcia and Lorca, and another to deposit Siydsa in Cieza, plus a concert Andalusian music.

Participants at the conference include names like Ahmed Tahiri prominent researchers from the University of Tetuan and member of the Al-Idrisi Foundation;

Santiago Otero, University of Córdoba;

Lomas Manuel Cortés, University of Valencia;

or teachers Houssem Saadaouri Endine and Ahmed, from the University of Manouba in Tunisia.
